If This Country Burns, We Burn With It.

Here’s a short message from the Kuweni Serious Team.

Featuring a random sampling of Kenyans. Directed by Mbithi Masya and Jim Chuchu for Kuweni Serious. Edited by Mbithi Masya. Narration by Bill Sellanga, words and music by Jim Chuchu.

There is a difference between the one who rents a house, and the one who owns a house. The one who rents a house doesn’t care if the walls crack and crumble, they can always move to another house.

The one who owns a house knows that no one else will take care of it, thus they paint the walls and mend the cracks.
More than 60% of Kenya’s population consists of young men and women like us.

The problem is that we behave like tenants of Kenya. We have let the older generation tear this country apart. We have let them use us to fight their battles. We have let them loot this country. We have let them fool us into thinking that we’re not fit to run this country ourselves.

So we hide in our alcohol, in our religions and on the Internet as if there is some other Kenya out there that we shall move to when this one crumbles. We sit at home and wait for others to fight for us on the streets.

We want green cards instead of voter’s cards. We are angry, but we are too scared to do anything about it. It is not Obama’s job to save this country. It is not the donors’ job, and the government has shown that it is not their job, either. Responsibility is not shared, it is earned.

Freedom is not given, it is taken. When we decide we want freedom, we will have to get it ourselves.

Because if this country burns, we burn with it.

  1. This is a message that should reach all young people through all our local and national languages ,and through some other form of media other than internet. We need to hear this more often than listening to our politician.

  2. Great work as usual! Please keep it up and please integrate with Facebook or twitter authentication so that its easier to comment :)

  3. Someone should cut down on the ‘live-coverage’, pre-referendum jabber and simply play this video over and over and over till we ALL get it! Great job!

  4. Then let us team and save Nairobi, with a reminder that Kenya is bigger than Nairobi; we need impact on rural areas of Kenya, that is where the fire will start next time, if we stop in Nairobi only.

  5. Eeeeh…you guys are doing a great job,coz enyewe me i am that guy who constantly thinks about stuff that will save Kenya…and then write a bitter update on facebook.Kenya ni country moja hakuna ingine na unless wasee wafungue macho…itl get very, very…yeah. and it surprised me that ilibidi nimetoka kenya ndio nione wat was going on..kinda like getting out of a room then watching wats cutting from outside. and its terrible…i mean hao leaders they should be ashamed. If i was the president,Mp whatever…ati i represent Kenya…I cannot look into Another presidents eye and shake his hand.ntakua na aibu haifanani…and these guys..with their 20man convoy go to Shanghai Expo and greet Hu Jin Tao as if…hes stamping his foot to be paid almost 15000$ a month…while people are miserable in IDP camps…traffic jams, poor economic policies…eish..You guyz stand for something great, and i love this idea…keep on keeping on.wazi.

  6. Am actually speechless and i guess borderline emotional since this has been on my mind for so long and i know its a long shot but a step in the right direction. I am so proud of the team behind this clip and i hope we can make it a reality. The solutions to our problems lie in our hands we just need to tap into them.

  8. When I grow up, I’ll pay off all of Kenya’s debts so that we can start afresh.
Kinda like re-formatting a computer, don’t you think?

  9. I feel palpitations, when I see all the great things that are coming from our great nation!! I can see the embers glowing in some of our youth I just wish we could get someone to fan this flame, set the place a blaze and show the leaders who is really in charge!! WE RUN THIS!!! SO WATCH OUT PARLIAMENT WE ARE COMING FOR YOU!!
