This is true, Kenya is like a chicken a decapitated head. A population synonymous with corruption. All we do is make noise and demonise other people besides ourselves. Police all over the place receiving bribes, senior civil servants stealing our taxes with glee! How it pains being a Kenyan!

OK yeah we get it, people are tired of the complaints and such, but this lady here by the name Njoki is putting a voice to all frustrated "youth" out there who didn't speak or write. You can't say that all we do is whine in Kenya, does this mean writing is not a form of activism? When a writer highlights the problems of corruption and mediocre leadership in Africa, isn't that form of activism, of alerting readers to the truth that not all is as it seems and that we are not so ignorant as not to have noticed that things are not right?
Before you point fingers and say that all she is doing is whining and blaming the system, what are YOU doing about it?
She's writing about it...what are YOU doing?

wonderful article, let us have more kenyans writing on this blog, we need to share our thoughts and experiences.

Like Joki, i was brainwashed to go for that white collar job that will bring in money. Raised in the rift valley and later moved to Nairobi i faced my challenges as a young person. My illeterate pastoralist parents sacrifised all their wealth to take my brothers and I to school, we did go to the best schools in Kenya hoping to be 'internationals' and maybe take up a big job with a UN Body in Geneva or New York, that was what they wanted. My education to start with was overpriced, I could have built 6 houses with it.My parents were prepared to do anything to make sure that i succeeded. When i completed my university degree, I then wanted to work for atleast 4 years before going for a masters. My first job was with an International Organisation in Nairobi, despite the fact that i had an International degree my salary was barely covering my expenses. I then realised that i was considered a 'local staff' and thus given 'local salaries' ,my white counterparts where treated differently; they were given cars, earned thrice of what I was earning, trips to their countries paid for, housing allowance...while i could barely move out of my parents home..

after years in the NGO applying for hire posts and not been selected.
I went to meet the director of the NGO and said '....... I would like to get an international salary and transfer to another country perhaps to Washington,Ecuador ,Congo, Indonesia or Vietnam since we had offices there too. He was lost for words, and i can understand; he was not used to locals demanding 'international treatment!!!

after failing to climb the international ladder, i then realised that I was doomed to my given status . your black ...so your local... so that is how far you can climb. This is very sad, i know many kenyans stuck ;either working for the United Nations or NGOs.

The HR officer once told me to ' be grateful for your job' and that is what I did. I was torn apart between my dignity on one side and my desperation to have a job'

Nice stuff. Gradually things will change. I would rather gradual change than a revolution which is usually bloody.

Sorry to join this discussion trail so late, but there's one trait about Kenyans that we tend to forget, ignore and downplay- and that is our patience and elasticity.
It amuses me, sometimes, how much bull Kenyans can take without raising a finger in protest or anger.
We know we are being lied to, robbed, mistreated and swindled and yet, we hold back our rage and simply watch. The liars, robbers, thieves and swindlers that are our leaders, equally amazed at our propensity for forgiveness and patience, try harder to annoy us - by doing the most outrageous, stupenduos and malicous acts of madness.
And still, we watch.

That unending tolerance and patience of Kenyans is what interests me the most. I cannot help but wonder when it shall run out - or what madness we shall unleash when it does.

Yawn! Yawnn!! Yawnnn!!!.... Kenyans are the perfect observers and complainers. Seriously, who do we expect to change the status quo if not us? We have been complaining for as long as we have been 'suffering'. What I would love right now is to be invited to join a progressive movement that actually has an actionable reform agenda. I am in the process of organizing one and I hope that all the 'fed up of status quo' Kenyans will be falling all over themselves asking "how may I serve Kenya?", "How do I make Kenya a better place?" or simply saying "I am truly effing tired of this sh*t and I am ready to die for a better Kenya".

I totally agree with Andrew.

BTW, love the article. Same stuff, new author.
